The Good Luck Girls

This is a fantasy story filled with action and adventure. It takes place in a western setting with no racial discrimination. Instead, discrimination is based on those who do or do not cast shadows. Shadowless people are servants and their daughters are sent to a brothel. Clementine, Aster, Tansy, Violet, and Mallow are the “Good Luck Girls” living a cursed life where they become prostitutes at age sixteen. They escape after Clementine murders a man she was auctioned to and who tries to rape her. The girls escape and begin a quest for freedom and try to find someone who can remove their tattoos. They are pursued by supernatural creatures. The characters are a diverse group of young women but a bit superficial, not well developed and hard to connect with. The writing is fine but the story is fantastical and hard to believe and connect to. It also moves slowly and was difficult to stay engaged with. The “romance” was unnecessary and did not add to the story which was just not compelling. It is difficult to recommend this story for anyone except adults who might enjoy a story that is a bit “out there” and in a western setting.
