The Ghastly McNastys: The Lost Treasure of Little Snoring
Meet the McNastys: twin pirate brothers on a mission to find the lost treasure on an island called Little Snoring, along with their neglected parrot, Peg Leg Polly, and second mate, Mrs. Slime. They’re the typical humorous-young-reader-story villains: stupidly coming up with their “ingenious” plans while the protagonists run circles around them. Those aforementioned protagonists happen to be poverty-stricken Tat and his genius best friend, Hetty, who want to find the treasure so Tat’s family can pay off their rent. It’s up to Tat and Hetty to make sure the treasure is theirs and the McNastys are gone.
Throughout the story, the author adds funny, short anecdotes such as how the author’s pet terrapin ate part of Chapter Two but “wouldn’t touch Chapter One.” Readers witness Peg Leg Polly’s epic fall from page fifty-seven to page eighty-six and the strange reason why there is no Chapter Nine (because seven ate nine, as the author explains).
While the book is not the most exciting, the mysterious appearance of kangaroos is downright perplexing, and the rather unsatisfactory ending is somewhat of a letdown, the book overall is a funny read for younger readers just entering the world of early chapter books.
