Lottie Brooks is eleven and three-quarters and will be going into the sixth grade. Since elementary school, Lottie has struggled with her public image after a girl discovered Lottie’s secret nickname for herself (embarrassing!) and spread horrible, mean rumors about Lottie. Lottie is starting the new school without her best friend (who moved to Australia!), with bad hair, and looking like (she thinks) a potato. But Lottie has a plan—she just has to reinvent everything about herself.
Written as a diary, The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks, by Katie Kirby, reminds me of Dork Diaries, which I like too. I like Lottie because she has problems like me, with an annoying brother who is obsessed with Minecraft, and she loves animals and bacon. Lottie makes lots of lists, like what they like (but I wouldn’t want to eat McDonald’s every day!). And the drawings in the book are cute little stick figures. It took a few entries to get into the book, and I wasn’t sure that I liked it, but I did. Lottie says you can’t trust parents to be objective, and I love that idea.
I hope Katie Kirby makes more of these books.
