The Evil Wizard Smallbone
Nick lives in Boston. So he should be used to blizzards. But one day he gets caught in one, by surprise, when he is fleeing from his uncle. As Nick searches for a place to spend the night, he stumbles upon a cottage. Inside that cottage lives a wizard. Nick thinks that he is safe; that is, until the wizard does not let Nick leave. Just as he thinks that it can’t get any worse, Nick finds out that a wolf is at the door. This is the other Evil Wizard, Fidelou, and his pack of killer wolves, who are howling at the village’s border, and the magical properties of the village are slowly fading. Now Nick is responsible for saving the whole wild. But how is he supposed to do that when the wizard won’t let him leave?
I think The Evil Wizard Smallbone by Delia Sherman is really well described and the author did a good job in creating the scenes. You cheer and are worried for Nick to be able to escape and do what he’s supposed to do, but you don’t know if he will be able to do it. I did not find that the book’s story lines always flew smoothly. But the mix of fantasy involving the young boy made the book very interesting and exciting to read. This would be a good book for someone who likes fantasy.
