The Epic of Clair
The Epic of Clair has to be one of best books written in prose I’ve ever read! It combines a very modern environment and a more old-fashioned way of writing, to create a more classic feel. It almost feels like it was written in the 17th century and could be read in a castle, especially the beginning. In Epic of Clair a girl named Clair lives in a fantasy 2008 in a very poor city. She is a cross-country champion, but also suffers from vertigo. She becomes a messenger for a band of urban witches to help her family get a better life. Clair is a great character. She is very strong and different from most characters. Because she has vertigo, it’s very surprising that she is a cross-country champion.
One of my favorite things about this book is the setting. For a second, I believed that the setting was real and that there had been another Great Depression in 2008. It’s a very believable setting, even if it’s not real. I also really love how layered the city is. At first glance, it might just seem poor and junky, but upon a closer look, you will find people living in water towers, wannabe vampires, and so much more! I think that The Epic Of Clair deserves its title and most definitely is epic.
