The Devil’s Standoff
This is a magic-filled fantasy-Western adventure with an amazing heroine and a plot full of twists and turns, magicians, and chupacabras. Hettie Alabama, her motley crew, and her magical/possessed revolver embark on a quest to finally rid herself of the bad guys who are pursuing her and of the revolver and its curse. Along the way she tries to keep her sister safe as they encounter a monster from hell and fight against a powerful army. It takes place in a small village across the magical Wall that Mexico built along the U.S. border. The plot moves smoothly and is filled with surprises. Despite it magical, fantastical setting, it touches upon some very real and important issues of colonialism and racism. The characters are believable, human, and flawed, which makes them real and very likable. Hettie is a strong, feminist, caring person who works hard to do the right thing. The writing is strong, with just the right amount of dialogue. This is definitely not your typical fantasy story or ordinary western. I recommend this for anyone who wants something that is fresh, a little weird, and has a strong female protagonist. This is a good read that will keep you wanting more. I can’t wait for the next one.
