The Deep Dark: A Graphic Novel
Magdalena Herrera has an ugly secret, and no one but her family knows. Ever since the tragic accident, Mags has been forced to give up a little bit of her blood every day. As Mags gets more overwhelmed by the darkness and responsibilities around her, things start to look up. When Mags finds out that her old best friend Nessa is back in town, she’ll just have to keep her secret hidden. So when the darkness comes across both of them, Mags and Nessa will find light, one way or another.
The Deep Dark is a beautiful graphic novel about stepping into the light, even when you’re afraid. This story was really good, it felt sentimental and comforting at the same time. Nessa played a huge role in the book, and I loved how caring her personality was toward Mags. The ending was so perfect, not a happy ending, but a good ending nonetheless. I also like how some of the panels are unique shapes and sizes, and the photos taken throughout the book were a nice touch. I recommend this book to readers who liked the author’s previous graphic novels, including The Girl from the Sea.
