Con artists know just how to manipulate our emotions, vulnerabilities, and insecurities to get what they want. But what, exactly, are the steps of a con? And how exactly do scammers exploit us? Author Maria Konnikova goes through each step of a con, from the “Put-up,” to the “Blow-off,” and “The Fix.” She walks us through how scammers gain our confidence, what they look for in people, and how they can instantly judge character very accurately. She uses many interesting anecdotes that illustrate the various steps con artists use. She also shows how there are certain stages that are common to all types of scams and cons, from fortune telling to Three-Card Monty and more. It is very interesting; the author intersperses scientific studies and research with her well-supported conclusions, and it is well-written and easy to read. This book is important to become aware of how you may be subject to cons – two especially valuable pieces of advice are to be aware of when you are vulnerable, as con artists look for vulnerability; and don’t think you are something special, that ‘this time’ the fantasy will be real. As always, if it seems too good to be true, it is!
