The Cardboard Kingdom
It is summer vacation, and the all kids in the neighborhood have joined together to create the Cardboard Kingdom. The Cardboard Kingdom is the fantasy world where each kid has their own character and story. Their summer is filled with dragons, sorcerers, princes, gargoyles, and many other creatures. With each character telling their own story, it was interesting to see how the other kids’ characters got involved. Even though all of the neighborhood kids were not friends to start out, they all share a love of fantasy and dress-up. The kids of the Cardboard Kingdom help each other to deal with the problems of friends and families who don’t really get why they would want to play pretend all the time.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel-styled story. There were times when the storyline was confusing because there are so many characters–occasionally a character would be in an earlier chapter before the character was actually introduced in their own chapter. Overall, it was nice to see all the characters come together by the end of the story when they head back to school at the end of summer vacation.
