The Blackthorn Key
Disgraced apprentice Christopher Rowe overhears his master, the alchemist Master Benedict Blackthorn, discussing mysterious murders that seem to have been targeting other masters throughout the city. One day, after having been sent on an errand, he comes home to discover his master has been murdered just like all the other masters had been. Terrified, Christopher must find a safe place to hide from the murderers as well as find out who they are and what they want.
This book was very sad, but exceedingly well written. It has a gripping plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next and worried about Christopher and how he will survive. It is really cool that he can decode practically every type of code. Christopher is very smart and quick-thinking, but he can’t do everything alone, and he has a good relationship with his friends and the other masters who help him. He was well balanced by his best friend, Tom, who complemented Christopher’s personality very well. It has a good resolution, and I hope there will be more books about Christopher to come!
