The Big Pig Stampede by Bob Hartman is the account of a fictional boy whose name is Gideon, also known as Goat Boy. Goat Boy is around during the time of Jesus and hears what Jesus has to say and sees some of the miracles that Jesus performed, all the while telling the story from his young boy point of view. Being a young boy, his point of view usually involves how hard life is, his friends, goats, and weird and gross things.

Goat Boy is kind and he likes to follow Jesus around. It helps that his family follows Jesus around selling all sorts of stuff to the crowds that follow Jesus. It is interesting to see the story of Jesus from a young boy’s view. It doesn’t contradict the accounts in the Bible, but lets the reader see those accounts as a young boy would have seen and experienced them. Although there are serious parts in the book, it is also funny.

This book would be good for boys and girls ages 8 to 14 who want to read about things that happened during Jesus’ time.
