Baby Deer Rescue is part of a series of short chapter books. The story takes place in Scotland, so some of the words may seem strange to kids in the US. Not only is the story about a group of kids who try to help animals with their volunteer work at a wildlife rescue, but the plot is also about being nice to people, as well as animals, and how everybody can help make others feel welcome. A new girl joins the animal rescue club, and at first, the others don’t like her. They think she is too loud and careless, and she really doesn’t know much about animals. But after they give her a chance, she ends up helping them in the end. They all learn the lessons of tolerance for others and acceptance of themselves.

Elementary school kids who like animals will like this book – it has one hundred pages, but the print is pretty big and each chapter is only a few pages long. There are lots of cute black and white drawings, as well as an illustrated appendix with facts about each of the animals mentioned in the story. This story about an injured fawn is fun and quick to read.
