Talkin’ Guitar: A Story of Young Doc Watson

In the mountains near the forest, Arthel Watson was born in 1923. He loved music from an early age. He listened to the birds singing, the whistling of the wind in the trees, crows cawing and his mother singing. Everything was music to Arthel. Before his first birthday, he went blind from an infection. But, his ears still worked. Music was important to the whole Watson family. Even though they were very poor, he father game him a harmonica when he was five, and also made him a banjo. Arthel would practice from dawn to dusk. He went from being a poor, blind boy to being a famous guitarist known as Doc Watsom. This book shows us that no matter how we’re born, if we work hard and follow our dreams, we can succeed.

I thought this was a very inspiring, creative book. I think it would be an especially good gift for a child who loves music or has a disability – or both. I’d recommend this book for kids of any age.
