Spin the Golden Light Bulb
When Kia, along with four of her other classmates, is selected to go to PIPS (Piedmont Inventor’s Prep School) for a competition, she is thrilled. But she and her newfound friends run into more trouble than expected, and Kia uncovers a secret that shatters her dreams and threatens to ruin her team’s final performance of the competition. Will the five talented children win the Piedmont Challenge (a prestigious national inventing competition)?
This book is masterfully written in the first person. Each of the story’s main characters had a unique personality, giving the story good variety. While reading it, I found myself relating to some of Kia’s feelings of nervousness during the competition. The inventions that the author thought of were extremely clever, and the solutions the characters came up with were surprising. The author must have had a great imagination! Because it is set in the year 2071, the author gave many of the characters’ actions and dialogue a modern ring. Although illustrations were not included, I still felt as if I could see everything because the wording was so vivid. I would most certainly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun read tinged with humor and even a little mystery!
