If you’ve ever had a slug day instead of a butterfly day, then this book is for you. Although the main character, Lauren, has Autism Spectrum Disorder, you don’t have to have ASD to understand what her days in elementary school and home are like. I could often tell when Lauren might be misreading a situation, for instance when she kisses a boy who has an angry face to make him feel better, even though she caused the angry face, but I still love her.

This would be a great book for kids who have ASD or for better understanding peers who might have ASD. Although Lauren is often frustrated or upset, it’s also a funny story that ends very joyfully. Lauren reminded me of kids I know, and the adults (parents and teachers) also seemed realistic.

The black and white pictures are on almost every page, and the illustrator chose really unique perspectives, like looking down on kids’ heads at recess or from inside the desk looking at Lauren’s face peeking in. I would definitely choose to read this book from the interesting title and cover jacket artwork.

The story is simple, as it only follows Lauren though a couple days and doesn’t have a larger plot, so is best for kids under eight or for kids who want to know more about what it’s like to have ASD.
