This book, Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood, was about two young girls named Red and Goldie going on an adventure both scary and magical. The focus of the adventure is to find one of the cures for Red’s grandmother, whom Red thinks is dying. Red does not like Goldie at first, and thinks she is just a nosy girl with a head of blonde curls. But as they continue in their journey to save Red’s granny, they grow closer and closer, and at the end of the story are the best of friends. First they go to a well filled with red wine that will make you stay young forever, but your memory will be gone. Next, they go to find red roses, and figure out that if Red gave them to her Granny, she would not only be immortal, but her appearance would be a nasty beast with heaps of fur all around. Last, she figures out that The Magic Hearts is not a place, but a something that will keep you alive forever if you hold to yourself. But Red, Goldie, and Wolf [Red’s animal friend, that she can speak to], do not take their chances, because the huntsman had done something very bad. Red, Goldie, Wolf, Borlen the dwarf, The Beast, and Horst the Huntsman, are all very fearless throughout this wonderful and magical story. The story never gets boring. Way to go, Liesl Shurtliff!
