Porridge: Oats + Seeds + Grains + Rice
Author Anni Kravi wants to change porridge’s bland reputation. After introducing “bases” like almond and vanilla hemp milks, chia “eggs,” and nut “rawgurt,” she dives into porridges both sweet and savoury and ends with toppings and snacks. Recipes include “Turmeric, Cacao + Buckwheat” with banana, lingonberries, and desiccated coconut; “Apple Multigrain Bircher” with spelt flakes, chia seeds, and crushed liquorice almonds; and “Turmeric, Mulberry + Vanilla Jar,” which includes honey (“or coconut nectar for a vegan option”) and dried mulberries. There are many others, which also feature obscure superfoods. Many of these ingredients may be very difficult, even impossible, to find. However, if you have access to such things as bee pollen and ashwagandha, this book may be for you. The recipes are easy to follow and simple to read and are free from unhealthy processed anything. Vegans can easily adapt the few non-vegan recipes. The true strength of this book, though, is the photography. Porridge is a gorgeous book. The photographs accent the meticulous topping placement and the interplay of texture and color. Anni is an artist when it comes to topping placement. Her thoughtful designs make her book fascinating to look through, even if the recipes may be difficult to source.
