A teen girl discovers her magical abilities following the death of her parents and embarks on a quest to avenge their deaths and save her own life. Kaya goes to live with her aunt after the murder of her parents. There she meets Kenneth, a Lycan, and together they fight to eliminate Senka, a powerful “Afflicted Lycan” who has her sights set on killing Kaya and taking her powers. The story is well told, although there are gaps. The dialogue switches between modern and old-fashioned language. There are many wonderful characters that are not always well developed, but I could see them becoming bigger players in future books. Most of the characters are likable, and there are plenty of strong females, which I always enjoy. I think there is a bit too much romance and the “mating” scenes are unnecessary in a teen book. I felt like Kaya went from a teen to an adult really quickly, and so it was less believable. The story does keep your attention, and the action, folklore, and caring relationships made this a story that I really enjoyed. I think anyone over 16 who likes romantic paranormal fantasy books should read this book. This is a quick and engaging read.
