This book is the Native American story of the origins of the Iroquois Confederacy. The story begins with how the five Iroquois nations journeyed Northeast to live out their beliefs. There they are forced to pay homage to the already settled Adirondack. The Iroquois people leave the place in canoes along the Oswego River only to encounter the Adirondack warriors. They are saved by a ferocious storm that kills the warriors. They are free and live peacefully until they come under the leadership of a man named Atotarho who knows evil sorcery and has an unquenchable thirst for power and war. Throughout the Iroquois territory there is no one who can oppose him and he had spies everywhere. Two men, Chief Hiawatha and Tekanawita find the courage and way to put an end to this misery without war but by uniting the people of the five nations to achieve peace. You would have to read the book to find out the stories of how they meet and get rid of Atotarho’s tyranny. The illustrations are beautiful. I recommend this book to kids who are interested in learning about the ways and wisdom of the Native American people.
