Paths & Portals
Secret Coders: Paths and Portals is a graphic novel about three friends named Hopper, Josh, and Eni who are learning how to write computer programs that tell robot turtles what to do. The janitor, Mr. Bee, gives them programming assignments.
One day, the students realize that Mr. Bee has a secret – he knows about underground classrooms full of robot turtles! Principal Dean wants the most powerful robot turtle that Mr. Bee has. He asks the mean rugby players at the school to help him get it. The funniest part in the book is when Hopper, Josh, and Eni program Little Guy, their turtle robot, to tie up the rugby players, then they spray them in the face with the hose!
Will Principal Dean and the rugby players steal all of Mr. Bee’s robot turtles? What does he need the turtles for, anyway? I love graphic novels, and this one was exciting. The story was engaging and funny. The language is a little more mature than I am used to, but it is still appropriate for older children. For kids who have no idea how to even begin learning about programming, this book is a useful tool.
