This is a futuristic, science fiction adventure story full of plot twists and important messages about what it means to be part of a greater community. Emmett Atwater is an African American teenager from Michigan who is living onboard a spaceship on his way to Eden where he will mine Nyxia. He has been promised that he will be able to make enough to live a comfortable life back home. Lured by this promise, he lands in Eden, where he and a few others make their way to Babel’s supply center. There they encounter the Imago who seem happy to have them there but who hide an important secret. Emmet and his diverse group of peers must learn to trust one another and work together for a common goal. The characters are well developed, show growth and depth and are very engaging. You feel their pain and celebrate their victories. The writing is solid and the story both builds upon the previous novel and takes the reader to a deeper level of understanding about what it means to be good, righteous, and supportive of one another. Sometimes the story seems a bit contrived but most of the time it is rich and compelling and leaves you wanting to know more. Definitely a story for those fourteen and up who like science fiction adventures with a message.
