Can you imagine a blistering hot desert land with no clean drinking water for miles around? Nya’s Long Walk, written by Newberry Award winner Linda Sue Park, is a story about a young girl in South Sudan in this exact situation. She and her little sister walk over a mile in the dry African heat just to get to their unsanitary water source. Fate strikes Nya when her sister struggles to walk home after becoming terribly ill, and it turns out to be from their unclean water!

The illustrations, done by Brian Pinkney, look like watercolors with brushes of color here and there. This picture book is a companion to the popular chapter book A Long Walk To Water. This book has a strong life lesson in it, which is to never give up, even when things turn to the worst. I recommend this version to anyone who liked the chapter book. I think everyone of all ages should read this book or have it read to them because the story has a great life lesson.
