My Friends and Me: A Celebration of Different Kinds of Families
My Friends and Me is a picture book that shows that there are lots of different kinds of families. This book shows families with two dads, two moms, one mom, a girl whose parents live in two different houses, a foster family, grandparents and even one who lives without parents and has a big sister who cares for the kids. No matter what type of family, the kids and their family members look happy and love each other.
My Friends and Me really celebrates all the different kinds of families and kids will be able to recognize the type of family they have. This book shows people of different colors and ages. I really liked reading My Friends and Me because it shows that there isn’t a “normal” family. Families can look so different from each other but they each give love. I loved the illustrations because they were bright, colorful and showed what each family looked like. My favorite page was the one with the foster mom, and they say she is good at juggling. The illustration shows mom juggling car keys, dog bone, cell phone, and bottle. I also liked looking at the background pictures, like the dog and her puppies, and the siblings making messes with bubbles and water. I would recommend My Friends and Me to kids who are learning about different types of families, or to kids who come from a family that may look different than others.
