Monsters: A Magic Lens Hunt for Creatures of Myth, Legend, Fairy Tale, and Fiction
Obviously, the book is about monsters. It talks about monsters from books, like Gollum and Baba Yaga. It also talks about monsters from the mountains, and castle monsters like vampires, or the Ghost of Anne Boleyn. There are also sea monsters, like the Kraken and mermaids. One of the best pages shows six monsters from Greek myths: the Chimera, the Hydra, Lerna, Chiron the Centaur, Cerberus, and the Sphinx. On each page there is a different category of monsters that you can read about, and at the end there is an activity page where you can put together different parts of monsters to create your own. The pictures are very colorful and cartoon-like, but one of the really fun things about this book is that it comes with a red plastic lens that you can use over places in the book to reveal hidden pictures underneath, if a monster is hiding there. This book would be very engaging for children who are about five to ten years old, but older children will like it too, although it doesn’t give as many details as older children would like, and some of the details are wrong. But younger children will really like it.
