Manuela hunts fish with harpoons with her dad. One day, they find a manatee. (I don’t like this part.) They kill the manatee and find its baby. Her dad sells the baby to Gomez. (My least favorite character is Gomez.) Manuela steals the baby manatee. She takes him to her grandma, a nurse. Manuela makes a plan for the baby: 1) Clean and pull the weeds out of the fish pond, so the baby has a home. 2) Do chores to make money for milk. 3) Make a school to teach people about manatees. 4) Get people to stop killing manatees. 5) Release the manatee back into the river. Will Manuela complete the list? Read the book to find out.

This book was easy to read. I loved the pictures. This book was based on a real story, which is at the end. I think the author wrote this book to keep people from killing or hurting manatees ever. My favorite character is the manatee calf. There are Spanish and Ticuna words. The author uses asterisks to explain what they mean. I think kids could learn a lot about manatees from this book. I had mixed feelings about this book. Some parts were happy and some parts were sad.
