Macbeth
This is a Manga adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic play. Macbeth, the main character, hears a prophecy that he will be king of the land. His wife convinces him to follow through with a plot to murder the king, which he does; but his regicidal reign leaves him with few trustworthy followers and is doomed to be a short, tragic failure.
The illustrations are detailed and emotional, but it seemed like this adaptation had a lot more text than Manga books usually do. If you are expecting a typical Manga, where the pictures tell most of the story, this may seem overwhelming or even boring, because you really have to read all the text to understand what is happening, and there is a lot of it; the text is exactly what Shakespeare wrote, and some of the language takes some getting used to. The pictures alone cannot do justice to Shakespeare’s work, but they help you understand what is going on with the characters much more clearly than just reading the text alone. This book serves as a great introduction to Macbeth and will make you want to watch the play. It is a fascinating tragedy that is worth experiencing in multiple ways.
