Lucy and the Magic Loom: A Rainbow Loomer’s Adventure Story
Lucy lives in England. On this particular morning, she’s feeling very sad because her friend Alyssa has moved to America. She is very bored until a package wrapped in brown paper is delivered. It’s not addressed to her, but Lucy can feel in her bones that it’s meant for her. Just then, her mother comes home and she won’t let Lucy open the package. Once her mother is gone, Lucy opens it anyway. Inside is a golden loom and envelopes that have labels like “See in the Dark,” “Invisible,” and “Breathe Under Water.”
She opens one that says “Practice” and begins to weave with the elastics that are in the envelope. Once she’s finished, the golden loom jumps up in the air lifting Lucy with it. It taps on the bookshelf and the bookshelf falls. Once Lucy has come to, she realizes she’s not in her parents’ office. She is in a green grassy meadow. Will Lucy ever be able to return home? Find out as Lucy talks sense into a frightened archer, distracts a giant cat, and weaves a trampoline with her magic loom.
I really, really like this charming book. It’s full of adventure, excitement, and magic. However, if you like to read about perfect little girls and the perfect things they do, please go find another book. This one is about a girl who is a little bit naughty, which leads to adventure and a whole new world. There are no illustrations so this is for more advanced readers. Alice Downes has written more books. I haven’t read them yet, but I’m sure they’ll be fascinating.
