Lizard Lady, The
Dr. Nicole Angeli is The Lizard Lady. She is a scientist who works on the island of St. Croix, and its surrounding islands, looking for the St. Croix lizard. The St. Croix lizard is a critically endangered species that lives only on these islands. When settlers came to St. Croix, they brought with them mongooses, who ended up eating all the lizards. So scientists moved some of the St. Croix lizards to some of the surrounding islands. Now scientists are looking on the island to find if the St. Croix lizards are still living there. When Dr Nicole finds a lizard, she marks where she found it with her GPS, and she weighs and measures the lizard before she puts it back where she found it. She is part of a group of scientists that is keeping track of the St. Croix lizard population.
I was really excited to receive The Lizard Lady because I really like reading books based on true stories. They help me learn about things that are actually happening. I have never heard of the St. Croix lizard before, and I liked learning about what scientists are doing to help their population. In this book, I especially love the section at the end, which teaches more about St. Croix, the lizards, what adaptation means, and what invasive species are. I liked the little write-up from Dr. Nicole F. Angelo. I would recommend The Lizard Lady to kids who like learning about endangered species and learning what scientists are doing to help these species.
