Life on Mars
I’ve read several Jon Agee books, so I was excited when Life on Mars arrived, but the first two times I read it I didn’t get the joke. Then my mom read it out loud to me, and I imagined being four to five years old again and seeing the Martian when the astronaut clearly does not! I think little kids will be yelling “turn around!” and think it’s funny that they are aware of something the main character is totally missing.
The pictures are simple and similar in style to his other books, but I didn’t like that there are only three or four dark colors. I also thought the Martian could have looked more interesting, but I liked that he wasn’t green with bobbles on his head like the stereotypical Martian. The ending is great, but I won’t give it away because it’s the best part of the book.
Terrific is still my favorite Jon Agee book, but if you are a fan of his books, you’ll probably like Life on Mars, too.
