Leah on the Offbeat
This is a funny and poignant classic story of end of high school excitement and angst, teen love, insecurities, hardship, and triumph. Leah Burke can’t wait to graduate with her friends but tensions are high in her friend group as prom comes around. Her friend group splinters, people break up, she struggles to figure out what this all means for her. To top things off, Leah, who’s bisexual, is crushing hard on someone she never thought she’d love. What follows is a touching story of navigating what her world has to offer. This book is very well written. It pulls you into the story from the very first moment. The dialogue, the detail, the emotional moments are all so strong that you are fully engaged. The book is realistic and funny and portrays everyone in realistic ways. The characters are wonderful, strong, complicated, and real. Leah is unapologetic, sarcastic, abrasive, and funny. This is a great book for all teens over fourteen but especially those trying to figure out how to be themselves, accept who they and others are, and just move through life’s challenges in a positive way. Read this book in one sitting. You won’t be able to put it down.
