Kamik Joins the Pack

Kamik Joins the Pack is the third book following Kamik the puppy, who wants to become a sled dog someday. Jake visits his uncle, who is a famous dog musher. Jake wants to show his uncle how much Kamik has learned, and he hopes Kamik will be a leader of a dogsled someday. Jake’s uncle explains what is takes to be a musher. The musher needs to keep his dogs healthy and feed them everyday, no matter what, even if it’s the middle of a snow storm. A musher needs to know how to fix his sled, sew harnesses, and build dog houses. These are things a musher will learn as he gets older. Jake’s uncle lets Kamik run with the other sled dogs to see if he has what it takes to be a sled dog.

I liked Kamik Joins the Pack because Jake’s uncle shows Jake how much work it takes to be a musher. I like that the illustrations show the dogs and the houses of the village in the background. This shows that there are not many houses where Jake and Kamik live. I had read Kamik’s First Sled, so I was very excited to get to read more about how Kamik is growing up and learning about being a sled dog.
