Just Like Beverly: A Biography of Beverly Cleary (Growing to Greatness)

Do you love books? Beverly Cleary always had a love of books, even when she was very young and did not have access to many books. Her mom started a children’s library where they lived so that other children who loved to read would be able to get books too. Even though Beverly loved books and reading, she didn’t love school at first. Her first-grade teacher was not very nice, and she didn’t let Beverly write with her left hand, so Beverly had a hard time in school. Then she got very sick, so she wasn’t allowed to go to school for a long time. When Beverly was finally able to go back to school, she had a very nice teacher who helped her learn and made learning fun again. Beverly Cleary always kept her love of children’s books and became a very famous author of children’s books.

It is fun to read and learn about authors and how they started writing books. I cannot imagine living in a place where books are not available, so it must have been hard for Beverly growing up not to have many options. I think it is amazing that she always thought about how she grew up when she wrote her stories and characters.
