Inch by Inch (Step by Step #2)
This is a science fiction futuristic story of a future where metal is dissolving and the people have to survive a world war. The story takes place in a small town, Sycamore River that has recently survived The Change which caused some people to cling to the future and others to go back to basics like horses and carriages as their modes of transportation. After having the plastic around the world melt, now they must deal with the aftermath of metal dissolving and the effects a world war. The book is well written with descriptive language. At times there is too much description that makes the story move slowly. The original idea is very interesting but sometimes the telling of the story dragged on and felt a bit dull. The characters were too many. I liked some, didn’t like others and some were just not very memorable. While I cared about what happened to them, I did not really get invested in any of them. There isn’t enough action and there is a lot of talking about what is happening and why they are doing or thinking about. Overall, it was an okay story but I think this book is better for an older audience, not young adults or teens.
