Description

Have you ever felt like you wanted to look exactly like everyone else? That’s exactly what happens to Hugo in a book called Hugo’s Hair by James Alfie. Hugo is this funny round orange guy who doesn’t have any hair at all, and he really, really wants some because all his friends have wild, colorful hairstyles and he feels left out.

The whole book is written in rhymes, so it’s really fun to read out loud, almost like a song. Hugo starts imagining every single hairstyle he could try. First, he thinks about tall hair, then round hair, then hair shaped like a square! After that, he pictures mohawks, spiky hair, a bob, and even braids, but he worries the braids might get all tangled up. He also imagines a big poofy curly afro, but then realizes he’d have to spray and gel it like crazy just to keep it looking right.

My favorite part is when Hugo tries out mustaches and beards just for laughs. There’s a whole page of him wearing a bunch of goofy fake ones, and they all look ridiculous in a good way. Then he thinks about a mullet, but he’s scared it’ll make him look weird. He even imagines a classic mop hairstyle and joins a band with it! By that point, Hugo says he’s getting tired of trying on so many different looks, and honestly, same. It’s a lot of hairstyles for one guy to think about.

The best part of the whole book is at the end. Hugo finally realizes something: if he actually had a ton of hair, he wouldn’t be able to see his own head in the mirror anymore! That’s when it clicks for him that maybe being bald isn’t a bad thing after all. He says true style isn’t really about what other people can see. It’s about being you. The last page just shows Hugo standing there, happy, with no hair, and it says that’s the best version of him.

I liked this book a lot because it’s not really about hair at all. It’s about how it’s totally fine to look different from your friends. You don’t need to copy everyone else to feel good about yourself. The pictures are also super colorful and kind of silly, which made me want to keep turning the pages just to see what wild hairstyle Hugo would try next.

I’d recommend this book to any kid who has ever felt like they didn’t quite fit in with everybody else, because I think that happens to basically everyone sometimes. It’s a happy book with a good message, and it made me laugh a bunch too.
