How Hot Is Lava?: And Other Questions About Volcanoes (Good Question!)
This is book is one of my big favorites! It explains everything about volcanoes, and I love getting to know more about volcanoes!
The 4 layers of earth explain why we have volcanoes (hot melting lava comes through the broken crust). The lava coming out of volcanoes is the hottest thing that exists on earth and can melt everything on its path, but it cools down after coming to surface and forms rocks.
Some volcanoes are called active, which mean they may erupt lava at any time. Some are called extinct, which means that the volcano shows no sign of being able to erupt ever again. Some are called dormant, which means they will not erupt any time soon but they may in the future.
There are hundreds of volcanoes on Earth, some in the ocean, some looking like mountains. There are volcanoes also on other planets, like Mars, Mercury and Venus.
Volcanoes can be very destructive when they erupt. Some cities in ancient Italy, called Pompeii and Hercolaneum, were completely destroyed by a volcano called Vesuvius. It is very rare to survive being in the middle of an eruption and the few people that have, talk about unbearable heat.
