Heartache and Other Natural Shocks
The book Heartache and Other Natural Shocks takes you into the 1970s, with two girls who have absolutely nothing in common. Jules is being split from her dad as she, her brother Bobby, and her mom move away to Toronto, Canada while her dad stays back to try to sell their house back in Montreal. Carla, Jules next door neighbor, couldn’t have a greater life. Carla’s biggest problems seem to revolve around boys, what to wear to school, and how to use her assets to her biggest advantage. The girls’ dislike for each other quickly turns to loathing as they fight over a hot bad boy, as well as try to compete for a role in the school play, Hamlet. Who will come out on top or will this be a fight neither can win? I have never read a book where the two point of views are so different. Jules’ fight with her reality being torn apart is captivating and Carla represents the struggle of every high school girl who wants to fit in and feel important. This page turner kept me captivated from the start and I never put it down once.
