Hansen and Gracie (Twicetold Tales)

Nobody wants to adopt Hansen and Gracie because they are just too strange to have. One day the man who runs the orphanage says that Hansen and Gracie are going out, but he leaves them in the forest. They eventually find their way back, but the same thing happens the next day. Instead of going back, they head in the opposite direction and find a lady who invites them into her house to stay the night. But when the twins wake up they find themselves in a witch’s house.

This book is an excellent rewrite of Hansel and Gretel because the plot has the same idea, but the story and its characters are very different. I liked how Gracie is the stubborn, brave twin, and Hansen is the smart, cautious twin. This book really made you feel sad for Hansen and Gracie. My favorite parts of the book are when the witch is screaming from inside the oven, and how the twins find their way back to the orphanage the first time. I liked how when the book described how Hansen and Gracie felt you sort of felt it too.
