Full of Beans
Beans Curry is back in this prequel to Newbery Honor-winning book Turtle in Paradise! Beans’ hometown of Key West has hit the Great Depression, and a team of “New Dealers” arrives to turn Key West into a tourist resort. Beans is skeptical of the plans – but his family, too, is in hard times, and he must decide if working a shady job for big money is worth it – unless maybe, with his help, those crazy New Dealers can save Key West.
Beans is a complex character, with subtleties that deserve a reread (or two), and seeing him as the protagonist puts a new perspective on his character. The story line, too, is interesting but tends to drag slightly in the beginning. Chapters in the book sometimes seem disconnected, but this does allow the book to cover a greater span of time and to make the story a little more realistic.
The book concludes with the beginning of Turtle in Paradise and begins about a year earlier. An author’s note provides historical background about Key West and the Great Depression.
Full of Beans is a new take on the characters from Turtle in Paradise and is definitely worth a read.
