Frederik Sandwich and the Earthquake that Couldn’t Possibly Be
This is a funny story about two kids who became criminals but save the day. Frederik Sandwich is an ordinary kid living an ordinary life on Frederik’s Hill on Fredrik’s Drive next to Frederiks Street behind Frederik’s Furnishings and down the street from the Ramasubramanian Superstore. Then he meets Pernille and helps reveal a secret plot involving an earthquake in a town where there have never been earthquakes before. It is full of adventures, brushes with the law, and many funny moments. At times, the plot moves along on one path and then suddenly shifts direction, which can be confusing. The characters are likeable but sometimes don’t seem quite real or easy to relate to. The story doesn’t always flow smoothly and jumps around a bit, although the dialogue between the characters was good. Kids between 9-12 might enjoy this story that is filled with mishaps and high-speed chase scenes. It would make a good series, especially for Lemony Snicket fans. Personally, I prefer stories that are more descriptive and less action-packed. Even so, this is a funny story that many kids might get a big laugh out of as they follow Frederik’s adventure.
