Finally Seen

We rated this book:

Ten-year-old Lina Gao last saw her parents and little sister five years ago. Since then, she’s been living in Beijing with her grandmother. Until now. Her parents are finally ready to bring her into their lives again. However, living in America poses some challenges for Lina. She struggles to keep up with English lessons, and it gets worse when a classmate writes a mean message about her on a stall door. With the help of two new friends and a teacher she immediately trusts, will Lina ever have the courage to speak up and be finally seen?

I’ve always liked Kelly Yang’s past books, and as expected, Finally Seen did not disappoint. Though, there were some things that stood out to me that made me like it even more. I didn’t really have a favorite character, but I did really like Lina’s friend, Carla, because she’s homeschooled like me! I also love how Lina found her voice through graphic novels, and I will definitely be looking up some of the graphic novels mentioned in the book. Recommended for people who need help finding their voice, and for them to remember that you’re never alone.
