Elysian Fields (Sentinels of New Orleans)
This is the first book by author Suzanne Johnson that I have picked up and read, and at first, I was a bit skeptical. It is as if she tries to cram every type of supernatural being into one story line and my verdict is still out on books with overkill. However, the main character, DJ, who just happens to be a young wizard sentinel, is a delightfully hopeless romantic with a serious job and between the two, it helps balance out the story. I felt the story was a female version of The Dresden Files, complete with quirky personality traits, which is probably what finally sold me as I love The Dresden Files.
By the end of the book I was glad I had decided to give this book a chance and will eventually get around to reading the previous two books, hopefully before the next book comes out. If you are looking for a walking dead serial killer axeman, a pirate, and a crazy magic staff, you have found your next read and I recommend it!
