Cici’s Journal: The Adventures of a Writer-in-Training
Cici’s Journal is a combination of a graphic novel and journal. I love both and also solving mysteries, writing, and animals (like Cici), so I was surprised not to be more absorbed by the book. The book is broken up into two stories: the first is about when Cici discovers an abandoned zoo and she and her friends help Mr. Mysterious bring the zoo back to life, and the second story is about a man who goes off to war and puts secret coded messages to his wife in the books he writes.
It seemed to me like the journal entries just summarized what had happened in the graphic novel portions, so maybe that was why the book was less interesting to me. I’ve read journal-style books where you could pull out letters from envelops or had actual “tickets” or other memorabilia included, and that would have been great for this book.
The illustrator used colors that were muted and dark. They looked like watercolors to me. The cover is amazing, and I wanted to read the book as soon as I saw it, but the journal portion was better done than the graphic novel parts. I think this book will appeal to second to fourth grade girls interested in mysteries, but maybe it would have been more enjoyable if it was told more as a traditional novel.
