Choose Your Own Adventure Spies: James Armistead Lafayette is based on a true story. This book tells the story of a young black man named James who was born into slavery in the 1700s. One night his slave quarters caught on fire and James quickly grabbed two children and ran from the burning building, but he bravely came back with water to try and save the home. The next day, General Lafayette came to look for more troops to join the Revolutionary War. From this point, you can begin to choose your own path to adventure. Will you enlist in the Continental Army like the real James Armistead Lafayette, or will you seek freedom on your own? My favorite version of this book so far is when James becomes a spy and searches among the British soldiers’ camp. He finds the enemy’s battle plans and even though he spills ink on them, he can still read the plans. He can’t wait to tell General Lafayette that the redcoats are coming to attack Yorktown. I recommend this book for ages nine and up because there is a lot of gun violence and some graphic descriptions of war. People interested in American history will enjoy this book.
