Children of the Fleet
This fast-moving science fiction story follows 11-year-old child genius Dabeet Ochoa as he strives to reach his dreams to be an expedition leader at Fleet School. Dabeet desperately wants to attain his dreams to get away from his mundane school and his over-protective mother. As he works to accomplish this he encounters many challenges along the way. Dabeet is not an especially likable kid—he is conceited almost to the point of narcissism, disrespectful, and judgmental. We do see him grow and change over the course of the story as he discovers his flaws and becomes a bit more self aware, but it’s not enough to change my overall impression of him. I want to root for him but…. The story is well written although it moves a little slowly. There is a bit too much dialogue at times, which I think contributes to the slow pace. It seems to be setting us up for future stories. This was my first book by this author, and I’d consider reading the sequel. I think this book is good for anyone over the age of 13 but especially science fiction fans of this author.
