Carol Gilligan and the Search for Voice (Extraordinary Women in Psychology Series)

Carol Gilligan and the Search for Voice is a very empowering book by Bill Cole and illustrated by Sarah Green. For me, it is especially empowering in these times where there is an election going on and there are many passages about Gilligan’s essays on the patriarchy. She explains at one point in one of her books (which is quoted in this book itself) that the opposite of a patriarchy is not a matriarchy—it is a democracy. Gilligan’s research on patriarchy and civil rights has changed the world forever. But most importantly, she gave light to the voices that were marginalized, like LGBT people and women.

I was particularly excited to learn more about Carol Gilligan as I understand that my grandfather found her work to be inspiring as he did research on early childhood education and families. There are several “Did You Know?” and “Try This” pages included in this book as well. The “Try This” pages encourage the reader to do an activity related to the material. Those particular sections may be helpful for children, but perhaps not so much for adults.

It turns out also that this book is part of the “Extraordinary Women in Psychology Series,” which includes a book called Evelyn Hecker and the Fairy Project. Putting the series aside, this is a very informative, inspiring, and empowering book for kids and adults alike to enjoy. I give this book five stars.
