Boot Camp Blues (Roller Girls)
Roller Girls: Boot Camp Blues is about a girl named Annie who goes to a roller derby boot camp with her friend Holly. The roller derby boot camp is held at a college campus and the girls are reminded that they are only high school age. When Holly and Annie go to an off-limits fraternity party, Holly drinks alcohol and Annie doesn’t. When Annie finds Holly passed out under a tree, what should Annie do? I really liked the message the book had about choices and being grateful for what she had. Annie understood how expensive the boot camp was for her dad and what a great opportunity it was, but Holly wanted to take advantage of her new found freedom. I liked the author’s use of humor, even though the subject was very serious. I also liked the camp counselor characters, they represented both sides of a roller girl, the competitive side, and the caring side that works with her team. It is a very good book and a definite five star read. Roller Girls has become one of my favorite series.
