Lucy Bluecrowne and her half brother, Liao, have grown up on their father’s privateering ship, the Left-Hand Fate. Now they have settled in the port of Nagspeake. Lucy is much more comfortable on a ship than living on dry land, but she is doing her best to make her little brother feel comfortable. Liao is special and has a talent for working with fire. He loves to make rockets and fireworks. Lucy wants to help Liao with his skill. Trigemine is a time traveler who is on a search for a conflagrationeer, someone like Liao. Along with his friend Blister, Trigemine must find a way to get Liao and bring him with him to another time where his boss is waiting for them.

The relationship between Lucy and Liao is very sweet. They care so much about each other that they would do anything to help the other one. Even though Lucy isn’t comfortable, she does her best to make sure Liao is happy and able to do his firework. It is a little scary to think about time travel and not knowing where Trigemine wants to bring Liao, but I kept wanting to read to find out what was going to happen next.
