Behind the Song

This is a collection of short stories based on songs that spoke to the authors. It might be a story painted in their mind. Or perhaps a true story where the lyrics gave them the courage to stand up for what they believed in, such as in “You Know Something’s Happening Here.” “I was seven when I first listened to ‘Ballad of a Thin Man.’ I was fourteen when I was big enough, old enough, and tough enough to stand up to my father and stop the cycle of violence that made our house a battlefield. All because of a song.” Or the painful truth of death, like in “Time to Soar.” “I remember I was in my head a lot, ‘cause my heart was a dangerous place to be.” Wrapped up at the end with a playlist of all the songs mentioned in the book, this is a good read that you don’t have to do cover to cover. The intended audience of fourteen and up is well suited because the stories are of a good variety, from serious to lighthearted to funny. The songs used are equally varied, with all genres represented. This compilation of stories can speak to young minds and growing minds and broaden their horizons, all because of a song.
