Baseball: Then to WOW!

This is a big book about the history of professional baseball, from the 1920s until today. This isn’t a book with a real plot (or a little cartoon boy!), but it does have the history of baseball broken up into sections like The Rules, The Teams, and The Stadiums, to name a few. There aren’t any real characters that help explain the story of baseball, but there are a lot of former and current baseball players mentioned in this book. For example, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Mike Trout, and Willie McGee are some of the great athletes that we learn about in this book, and there are many others as well. The illustrations in this book are great! They are made up of actual pictures along with drawings of baseball players and baseball action. My favorite section in this book was the section on “Flamethrowers”! This might sound dangerous, but it just refers to baseball pitchers who can throw a baseball really fast. Some pitchers can throw the ball up to 100 miles per hour!

Although this book really wasn’t much of a story, I enjoyed the book and learning about the game. A quote from this book that I liked is by former Most Valuable Player Yogi Berra. He said, “Nobody goes there any more. It’s too crowded.” I thought that was funny.

Boys and girls who enjoy sports and learning more about them would enjoy this book. I know I did. I hope I get to go see a real baseball game some day!
