Balderdash!: John Newbery and the Boisterous Birth of Children’s Books
This book is about a person named John Newbery. When he was growing up, he really loved books. But the problem was, children weren’t supposed to have books. People thought that if their children read books, they might become wild. So all their books were really boring. If you are wondering why this book is called Balderdash, this is why. When John Newbery grew up, he published books for children. He thought that children’s books should be fun and interesting, not boring. I am really, really glad about that! This book is interesting and fun because it has good pictures and lots of colors and interesting words and lots of things to look at on every page while you are reading the story. John Newbery started making children’s books about three hundred years ago, so it is fun to see what people wore back then and the things they liked to read about. But I really like the way books are made now! This book makes you think about how different books used to be and makes you be glad that John Newbery decided to make books for children in a different way.
